The LEGO Group opens first dedicated manufacturing innovation centre

• Enables faster concept-to-production across the LEGO Group’s global manufacturing network.

The LEGO Group today officially opened Kornmarken Campus, its first dedicated global manufacturing innovation centre. The new campus is part of the company’s investment in manufacturing technologies and capabilities that power product development and production.

Located in Billund, Denmark, where the LEGO Group was founded 94 years ago, Kornmarken Campus is rooted in the company’s craftsmanship and engineering heritage. It brings together people and technologies in an environment designed to inspire collaboration. At the same time, it will accelerate the speed and quality of innovation to enrich LEGO® play experiences for children worldwide.

Niels B Christiansen, Chief Executive Officer, said: “Kornmarken Campus strengthens the LEGO Group’s foundation for future growth. By bringing all aspects of manufacturing innovation together in one location, we can speed up how new ideas move from concept to reality in our global operations network.”

Together with the legacy factory, the 47,000 m² campus forms a 100,000 m² state-of-the-art facility. From here, around 1,800 LEGO colleagues from engineering, quality and manufacturing will develop, test and scale new manufacturing technologies, while also continuing production of LEGO bricks.

Carsten Rasmussen, Chief Operations Officer, said: “The LEGO Group has among the most talented engineers and craftspeople in the world. This facility will provide them with the necessary tools and technologies to expand what’s possible for product development and production, both now and in the future.”

The opening was marked by a ribbon‑cutting ceremony attended by Billund Mayor Stephanie Storbank, as well as representatives from the national and local business community and design partners, alongside Niels B. Christiansen and Carsten Rasmussen.

Kornmarken means ‘grain field’ – representing fertile ground for ideas and innovation. It is where bold ideas are turned into quality LEGO play.

Key facilities include:

• Test & Innovation Centre: Development, testing and scaling of new LEGO elements, production processes and technologies across moulds, moulding, processing and packaging
• Materials Lab: Research into more sustainable raw materials, including alternatives to fossil fuel-based plastics.
  
  
• Additive Manufacturing Centre: Experimentation and development through advanced 3D manufacturing capabilities.
  
  
• Training Academy: Bringing together apprentice academies for plastic makers and tool makers to build future specialist capabilities.
  
  
• Mould Manufacturing: Manufacturing of moulds for novelties and new mould concepts

Kornmarken Campus also represents a long‑term investment in people and skills. It supports the development of specialist capabilities needed for future manufacturing excellence.

The campus is designed to inspire collaboration, learning and wellbeing, with shared workspaces and thoughtfully developed facilities that reflect the LEGO Group’s values and craftsmanship heritage. Distinctive features include a 25‑tonne red 2x4 LEGO brick installation and historic moulds, linking decades of engineering expertise with future innovation.

Sustainability has been integral to the design and construction of Kornmarken Campus. With the ambition to achieve LEED Platinum certification, the building incorporates energy‑efficient systems, renewable energy supply, rainwater management and measures that aim to strengthen our relationship with nature and a healthy indoor environment.

The 22,000 m² mass timber construction helps reduce the building’s environmental footprint by locking carbon into the structure, while an existing nearby 4 MW solar park will partly power the facility. The LEGO Group is also building a new 80-100 MW solar park which once completed, will be able to match 100 percent of the LEGO Group’s total energy consumption in Billund. Later this year, the campus will open a Sustainability Play Lab, welcoming schoolchildren and visitors to learn more about the LEGO Group’s journey towards more sustainable materials.

Kornmarken Campus marks the latest milestone in the LEGO Group’s ongoing investment in Billund as its global headquarters and a centre for innovation, creating local value and supporting future LEGO play experiences worldwide.
