AQUALIBER N and LABMÓVIL win the second edition of Roota, whilst GreenScore Plug-In is a finalist
The second edition of Roota, the FCC Group’s intrapreneurship programme organised by the Digital Innovation Lab team, has come to a close with the Demo Day held at FCC’s Corporate Headquarters in Las Tablas (Madrid), marking the end of the programme’s third and final phase.
During Demo Day, the teams competing in the final stage presented their projects to an evaluation committee comprising the heads of the business area and members of the Executive Committees of FCC and Inmocemento, who assessed the maturity, impact and viability of the projects.
Following the evaluation process, two teams were named joint winners of this year’s edition: AQUALIBER-N and LABMÓVIL, both from Aqualia in Spain. Both projects excelled for their advanced stage of development and the genuine potential of their solutions to generate business impact.
Over the course of the programme, both teams developed a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), validated their business assumptions, and defined their business model and financial viability plan, showcasing the practicality and scalability of their proposals.
Winning projects
AQUALIBER-N, developed by Patricio Hermosilla, Irene Fernández, Damián Amador and Miriam Tena of Aqualia, offers an innovative solution to address one of the most significant environmental challenges in water management: eutrophication and nitrate pollution in inland water bodies. More precisely, the project proposes a novel approach aimed at restoring water quality and regenerating degraded environments, while supporting increasingly demanding regulatory requirements and sustainability objectives.
The project’s value proposition lies in its integrated approach, combining technological innovation with operational expertise to tackle sources of pollution directly, reducing nutrient loads and improving the ecological status of water bodies. Its potential application across a range of environments—from inland waters to coastal ecosystems—makes it a scalable, high-impact solution capable of contributing both to environmental protection and to value creation in the water management sector.
LABMÓVIL, headed up by Cristina Fernández, also from Aqualia, seeks to transform the traditional water sampling model through the development of a mobile laboratory capable of carrying out accredited sample collection and on-site analysis. This approach responds to emerging regulatory requirements that will demand more rigorous, traceable and auditable processes in the years ahead. In this context, the project proposes a fundamental shift by integrating all the resources required to perform the entire sampling process within a single mobile unit, while ensuring high standards of quality and reliability.
Its value proposition is based on operational optimisation, direct process control and improved efficiency, reducing reliance on third parties and simplifying the logistics associated with traditional sampling methods. The project has also demonstrated clear internal viability and acceptance, with results showing its ability to improve service quality and deliver significant savings compared with the current model, while strengthening traceability, coordination and quality assurance throughout the process.
Finalist team
GreenScore Plug-In, from FCC Environment CEE in Austria, was ranked third in this year’s edition. Developed by Nora Bohrn and Natasa Maksimovic, the solution introduces a novel approach to investment decision-making by systematically integrating sustainability criteria into project evaluation processes. At a time when ESG factors are becoming increasingly important, the solution addresses the current fragmentation of data and the difficulty of quantifying its real impact. Through a digital model, the system generates a score that combines sustainability indicators with financial metrics, providing a more comprehensive and objective assessment of each project.
Second edition of Roota
The second edition of the programme once again showcased the internal talent of FCC Group and Inmocemento. Participation was open to all company employees, regardless of their geographical location, professional category or role.
Roota continues to strengthen its position as a strategic FCC Group initiative for fostering internal innovation and cross-functional collaboration. By bringing together multidisciplinary teams and supporting them with innovation methodologies and expert guidance, it addresses business challenges through the development of tangible, viable and sustainable solutions capable of generating real impact in a constantly evolving environment.
