CPKC signs transportation agreement with BHP

BHP, the world’s largest mining company, today announced that CPKC and BHP have signed a transportation agreement for CPKC to provide rail service to the company’s future Jansen Potash Mine in east-central Saskatchewan.

“We are pleased to enter into this agreement with BHP as they expand into the potash market,” said Keith Creel, President and CEO. “Leveraging our position as the premiere shipper of potash in North America, we look forward to providing our industry-leading service to BHP helping to drive innovation and reliability across the potash supply chain.”

Under the agreement, CPKC will operate unit trains between Jansen and Westshore Terminals in Vancouver, utilizing BHP-owned railcars. The initial term of the contract is approximately four years, supporting Jansen Stage 1 production, with a future arrangement to be aligned with the next phase of the project. 

Production at Jansen is expected to begin in mid-2027, according to BHP. The project is located approximately 7.5 miles north of CPKC’s Sutherland Subdivision.

The agreement will support the movement of potash from the mine to be exported to global markets.

“This is an exciting step forward as we prepare Jansen for first production,” said Karina Gistelinck, Asset President Potash, BHP, said in the company’s announcement.
