About the Author
Mauvareen Beverley, M.D. is the President and founder of Mauvareen Beverley, M.D., PLLC., where she practices as a Patient Engagement and Cultural Competence Specialist. She is an executive-level physician and a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine with more than twenty years of experience advancing health equity, particularly in African American communities.
Dr. Beverley has held leadership roles including Assistant Vice President and Physician Advisor for NYC Health + Hospitals and Deputy Executive Director of Kings County Hospital, where she led initiatives that significantly improved equitable health outcomes. A nationally recognized thought leader, she has lectured extensively on health disparities, patient engagement, and the human experience in healthcare.
Her work has been published in the Journal of the National Medical Association, and she has presented at major conferences including the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). She is a recipient of the Excellence in Medicine Award from the Bronx County Medical Society and is an active member of leading organizations including the American Medical Association (AMA), National Medical Association (NMA), and National Association of Health Service Executives (NAHSE).
As of 2026, Dr. Beverley was one of eight African-American women to receive the Dr. Sandra Gould Women of Distinction Award from the New York Regional Chapter of NAHSE. On May 15 th, from the Bronx County Medical Society, she received an Honorary Award for Excellence in Health Equity, Patient Engagement, and Cultural Competence. And on May 16 th, she was recognized by McCune Smith-Cordice Medical Society in appreciation for her presentation: Patient Engagement and Cultural Competence Roadmap to Achieve Health Equity.
