Airbnb, FIFA World Cup 2026™ Mexico City Host Committee and Mexico City’s Tourism Promotion Fund, announce new Community-powered World Cup Exhibition and fan experience with Hugo Sánchez
Key Takeaways
- The new exhibition showcases nearly 600 pieces of football memorabilia provided by local residents from the 1970, 1971, and 1986 FIFA World Cups, celebrating Mexico’s illustrious football culture.
- Airbnb is also teaming up with football icon, Hugo Sánchez, for a guided tour of the exhibition and exclusive access to “La Cantera”, the legendary training facility of Pumas UNAM, where Sanchez started his career.
With just two weeks until kick-off, Airbnb CEO & Co-Founder Brian Chesky, unveiled a brand-new exhibition celebrating the FIFA World Cup 2026™ in Mexico City in partnership with the local Host Committee, and Mexico City’s Tourism Promotion Fund. The partnership is part of Airbnb’s Host City Impact Program, which aims to boost economic growth, strengthen community ties, and enrich the city’s cultural scene.
Brought to life through the Mexico City’s Tourism Promotion Fund, “Collective Memory of the FIFA World Cup – Mexico 70, Mexico 71 and Mexico 86: The City That Never Stopped Playing” exhibition opens to the public on May 30 with free admission for the public. Honoring these three iconic tournaments, the exhibit links Mexico’s rich football heritage to the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026™ and features nearly 600 objects contributed by residents, including personal keepsakes and memorabilia. There are also institutional collections and works by invited artists illustrating the unique ways Mexicans have lived and experienced World Cup tournaments. The exhibition also pays tribute to the 1971 Women’s world cup and the group of pioneering women that represented the Mexican national team who reached the final, an often overlooked chapter in the city’s football legacy.
“The World Cup is one of the rare moments when the whole world feels connected. That belief in bringing people together is at the heart of Airbnb. This partnership celebrates Mexico’s football legacy, while also bringing together local communities around a shared passion for the World Cup and its history.” said Brian Chesky, Co-founder and CEO, Airbnb.
Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, Mexico City’s Tourism Minister added, “This exhibition is also a tribute to the community spirit of Mexico City: to the families who preserved their World Cup memories for decades, to the neighbors who turned football into a shared celebration in the streets, and to the generations that have made this city the emotional capital of football. Under the leadership of the Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada Molina, we continue building a city that understands sport as a bridge of encounter, memory, and cultural rights. The World Cup in the capital is experienced collectively and beyond the stadium. And in 2026, when the ball rolls again in this historic city, we will confirm something that millions of people have felt for decades: the ball is coming home.”
“Mexico holds a unique place in the history of the FIFA World Cup, and its people have shaped the spirit of the tournament across generations. This community-powered exhibition honors that legacy by connecting past and present, and by celebrating football’s cultural power to unite communities and inspire future generations,” said Michel Bauer, Host City CEO for Mexico City at the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
The exhibition is located in the historic Inter-American Conference on Social Security (CISS) – part of the same complex where Pelé and the Brazilian team stayed during the 1970 World Cup. Fans can even visit Room One, where Pelé slept before the legendary final victory over Italy. Open to the public May 30 – July 26 in Magdalena Contreras, with free admission. Fans can also book an Airbnb experience for a guided tour with the exhibition curator.
Airbnb is bringing Mexican football legend Hugo Sánchez back to host a new experience helping fans get ready for the tournament. Up to ten guests will partake in an exclusive insider’s day guided by the legendary “Pentapichichi” himself at key Mexico City locations that have helped shape his success. Guests will join Hugo to go behind the scenes of the new museum exhibition along with an exclusive tour of “La Cantera”, the official training facility of Pumas UNAM, where his career began. They will shop vintage football jerseys, exchange custom football player stickers, snack at Hugo’s favorite local spots for tacos and beer, and even receive FIFA World Cup 2026™ tickets to watch a Mexico game at the Mexico City Stadium.
“With the World Cup around the corner, I’m excited to be an Airbnb host once again offering an experience for fans who live football with the same passion that I have. It will be an opportunity to revisit some of the places that have shaped my story in Mexico City. For me, football is about sharing, connecting, and creating memories that last forever with our community,” said Hugo Sánchez. The experience will take place on June 4, and bookings will be open on May 28, 2026 at 9:00 AM (Mexico City time) on www.airbnb.com/hugolworldcup1.
