In recognition of Heat Safety Week (May 18–22), safety professionals across Puerto Rico are highlighting the critical importance of preventing heat-related illnesses in the workplace. The annual observance serves as a timely reminder for employers to review heat illness prevention plans, provide employee training, and implement environmental monitoring programs before the hottest months of the year arrive.
Workers in agriculture, construction, landscaping, warehouses, manufacturing, and other high-temperature environments face elevated risks of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Without proper safeguards, prolonged exposure to heat can lead to serious medical emergencies, reduced productivity, and increased workplace incidents. Key prevention strategies include ensuring ready access to clean drinking water, providing shaded or cooled rest areas, allowing time for acclimatization of new and returning workers, and conducting continuous monitoring of temperature and humidity levels.
“To assist employers in maintaining a safe and compliant work environment, Zimmetry offers comprehensive industrial hygiene consulting, testing, monitoring, and training services designed to identify and mitigate exposure to thermal stressors and a wide range of occupational hazards,” said Harry Peña, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Our experienced professionals help organizations develop effective injury and illness prevention plans that address heat exposure risks and temperature extremes. We also provide occupational testing and monitoring, heat illness hazard communication training, and evaluations of engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment to support worker safety and regulatory compliance.”
Heat Safety Week outreach efforts also emphasize the importance of worker education and early recognition of symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, heavy sweating, and confusion. Prompt response and medical attention can prevent minor heat stress from escalating into life-threatening conditions.
As part of its ongoing public education initiatives, Zimmetry recently sponsored an informational video on protecting outdoor workers from heat hazards, available at: https://youtu.be/5c_h_ietk0Q
