Asthma & Allergy Awareness Month 2026 Spotlights Respiratory Health in Puerto Rico

Each May, communities across the United States and its territories observe Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month to promote education, prevention, and effective management of respiratory conditions. This year, the global observance included World Asthma Day on May 5, reinforcing the importance of reducing exposure to asthma triggers and improving air quality in everyday environments.

Asthma remains one of the most common chronic diseases in Puerto Rico and throughout the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The condition affects the lungs and can cause recurring episodes of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. In severe cases, asthma attacks can become life-threatening.
