About the Authors:

VADREVU “VK RAJU, MD, FRCS, FACS is an Eye Surgeon and humanitarian, a university professor, Founder and Director of the Eye Foundation of America (EFA). He is the recipient of many international honors and awards. In 2008, he received the Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award.

Born and raised in Rajamundry, Andhra Pradesh, went to medical school at Andra University in Visakhapatnam, and completed an ophthalmology residency and fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons. Trained in corneal transplant surgery, he also holds a D.O. degree from the University of London, & Board-Certified Ophthalmologist in the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Raju is Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Dr. Raju founded the Eye Foundation of America (EFA), a charitable organization serving in India, Afghanistan, Ghana and Iraq. With its mission to cure childhood blindness and make eye care affordable and accessible, in rural areas of developing countries.

Dr. Raju also helped found two hospitals in India, the Srikiran Eye Institute and the Goutami Eye Institute in his hometown. Over the course of his career, Dr. Raju has authored more than three hundred papers, one hundred publications and seventeen book chapters. He is the co-author of ‘‘‘Musings on Medicine, Myth, and History: India’s Legacy,’’’ along with his daughter.

DR. LEELA RAJU is proud to join her father in his goal to eradicate avoidable blindness. She is an associate professor of ophthalmology at NYU Langone Eye Center in NY, NY and acts as the secretary and education coordinator for EFA. She travels to Goutami Eye Institute in Andhra Pradesh regularly to teach and see patients and is helping develop the EFA collaboration in Ghana.

In addition to her non-profit work, Dr. Leela Raju is a board-certified ophthalmologist. She graduated from Marshall University, WV in 2003. She completed a residency program at Johns Hopkins University in 2004 and another residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2008. She completed her cornea fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in 2009.
