Northrop Grumman’s Lumberjack Advances Battlefield Capabilities

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) showcased the autonomous mission capabilities of its Lumberjack™ Group 3 Uncrewed Aircraft System during the US Army 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault)’s Operation Lethal Eagle exercise.

This demonstration supports progress toward rapid field deployment and advances autonomous warfare capabilities.

Lumberjack successfully demonstrated:

• Full Autonomous Mission Control: Army personnel tested Lumberjack capabilities through the U.S. Army’s Maven Smart System.
  
  
• Precision Strike Capability: Lumberjack deployed simulated munitions of Northrop Grumman’s Hatchet, a six-pound miniature precision strike munition offering key capabilities traditionally associated with larger weapons.
  
  
• Adaptive Targeting with AI Assistance: Palantir’s Agentic Effects Agent integrated automated target detection tools to quickly adjust to dynamic battlefield scenarios under human supervision.
  
  
• Extended Communication Range: Maintained continuous beyond line-of-sight communications to send real-time mission updates and damage assessments via satellite datalink.
  
  
• Multi-Role Flexibility: After completing precision strikes, Lumberjack transitioned seamlessly to surveillance mode to gather additional battlefield intelligence.

Lumberjack is a low-cost, one-way attack uncrewed aircraft system designed to support modern combat. With a modular center bay, Lumberjack offers flexibility with interchangeable payloads— switching between kinetic strikes and non-kinetic effects.
