Safeguarding America’s Most Dangerous Workplaces

Across the United States, thousands of workers face serious, and sometimes fatal, hazards simply by doing their jobs. In 2023, 5,283 workplace fatalities were reported nationwide. When measured per 100,000 workers, fatality rates highlight the elevated risks in certain occupations. Industries such as logging, commercial fishing, aviation, refuse collection, and roofing consistently rank among the most dangerous, exposing workers to falls, transportation incidents, confined spaces, excessive noise, airborne contaminants, and struck-by hazards.

Industrial hygienists play a critical role in identifying and reducing these risks before injuries or illnesses occur.
