Johnson Matthey’s DPFi™ diesel particulate filter system achieves new Canadian safety certification

Emissions control technology to improve air quality for underground workers is certified for operations in Canada and approved for use in the US

Johnson Matthey (JM) today announced that its DPFi TM electrically regenerating diesel particulate filter (DPF) has been certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), confirming its safety and performance for use in underground mining and tunnelling environments.

The DPFi system has now been independently certified by three leading bodies – the CSA, Canmet Materials (both Canadian), and by the Verification of Emission Reduction Technologies Association, based in Switzerland. It has also been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration in the US. This backing provides strong assurance that the technology effectively reduces diesel particulate emissions in demanding underground settings.

Designed for light duty diesel vehicles such as the Toyota Land Cruiser*, the DPFi system helps protect workers from harmful diesel particulate matter — a significant health risk in confined spaces. By regenerating electrically rather than relying on high exhaust temperatures, the system maintains consistent filtration performance, avoids filter blockages, and reduces downtime – all of which harm air quality and productivity.

When regeneration is required, drivers simply connect the vehicle to an external power source underground. This eliminates the need to bring vehicles to the surface and keeping air cleaner throughout the shift.

Stan Mack, Commercial Manager at Johnson Matthey, said: “The DPFi system is designed with a clear purpose – to protect people working underground in some of the toughest environments in the world.

“CSA certification, alongside recognition from other key bodies, confirms that this technology delivers proven improvements in air quality and worker safety.”

*While currently certified for the Toyota Land Cruiser, the DPFi system can be adapted for other diesel vehicles, offering wider potential to improve underground air quality across global mining and tunnelling operations.
