VA Rivera Expands Children’s Poetry Series with a Third Book on the Horizon

VA Rivera, a retired New York State educator and children’s author, continues to nurture young writers with her growing series of poetry books. Following the success of “Kids Read and Write Japanese Haiku” and “Kids Read and Write Japanese Tanka,” Rivera is preparing to release a third book, offering more opportunities for children to explore the world of poetry.

In “Kids Read and Write Japanese Haiku,” children ages 6–11 are introduced to the art of Japanese haiku through themes such as playful activities, nature’s wonders, the mysteries of space, and the magic of friendship. Rivera encourages children to use their senses, emotions, and imagination to create their own poems, with examples like “Hopscotch” and “Dancing Leaves.” The book makes poetry accessible and enjoyable while inspiring creativity and imagination.

“Kids Read and Write Japanese Tanka” continues this journey for children ages 8 and up, teaching them the 5/7/5/7/7 syllable pattern while exploring themes like seasons, animals, clothing, food, and nature. Using examples inspired by elementary students, Rivera encourages children to transform their thoughts and experiences into beautiful verses, turning poetry into a fun and engaging creative adventure.

“I want to continue with other forms of poetry and make this a series of books on how to learn how to write and teach poetry,” Rivera said.

Rivera recently showcased her work internationally, hosting book signings for “Kids Read and Write Japanese Haiku,” “Kids Read and Write Japanese Tanka,” and her storybook “I Am Puppy” at the 2025 Frankfurt Book Fair. Featured at The Reading Glass Books booth, she met readers from around the world and guided children in exploring their own poetic voices.
