Motorola Introduces “Cable PON” Ultra-Broadband Technology – Combining HFC and PON Architectures to Boost Cable’s Competitive Edge

WEBWIRE

LAS VEGAS – Motorola, Inc (NYSE:MOT) extends its track record of Ultra-Broadband innovation with the announcement today of Cable PON, a technology approach that delivers Passive Optical Network (PON) solutions customized to accommodate existing cable infrastructures. Cable PON, a uniquely cable-driven technology, delivers the business benefits of combined Hybrid-Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) and PON network architectures.

The advantages cable operators gain by laying new fiber is often hampered by the inability to leverage existing HFC node presence or offer transparent delivery of their current service set. Motorola’s Cable PON now gives these operators the ability to extend service via PON while setting the stage for seamless evolution to Motorola’s proven GPON enabled fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) platform while still utilizing cable resources already in place. By emulating a traditional coaxial network, Cable PON allows cable providers to deliver deep-fiber services that simply plug directly into their existing cable infrastructures and back-office operations. In other words, cable providers can continue to use set-top and DOCSIS equipment located in homes and headends over PON while adding new FTTP connections in proximate green-field locations supporting Ultra-Broadband service delivery into residential and commercial subscriber communities.

“Hybrid networks are not new to the cable industry, but this cable-operated fiber approach is unique in both its cost-effective nature and its ability to create a migration path to future GPON FTTP deployments,” said Kevin Keefe, vice president of marketing and business development, Motorola Connected Home Solutions. “Motorola’s Cable PON helps enable operators to enjoy the benefits of select FTTP build-outs today, including increased reliability and reduced maintenance costs, while offering consumers a seamless experience no matter what type of network reaches their front doors.”

Cable PON is an emerging element in Motorola’s suite of Ultra-Broadband offerings and represents Motorola’s ability to pave the way for greater bandwidth capacity over any type of broadband access network. In addition to the technology that makes solutions like Cable PON possible, Motorola provides professional services expertise to analyze any broadband environment and select and deploy the right solution for delivering Ultra-Broadband services.

Demonstrations and more information on Motorola’s Ultra-Broadband solutions are available at Motorola’s booth#1452 at The Cable Show.
