Turin – WEBWIRE
  • The Stellantis Safety Center in Orbassano, near Turin, today marked its 50 th anniversary, welcoming Emanuele Cappellano, Stellantis Enlarged Europe COO.
  • Founded in 1976, the Safety Center has continuously evolved through advanced research and innovation and today stands as a flagship of Stellantis’ engineering ecosystem and a recognized reference for vehicle safety development and crash testing worldwide.
  • Covering a total area of 110,000 square meters and employing more than 100 specialists working across two shifts, the Safety Center operates as an integrated excellence hub. It features four test tracks with four impact points and is capable of performing physically or through digital simulation up to 1,000 tests per year on passenger cars, commercial vehicles and components.
  • A milestone of this anniversary is the completion of over 24,000 crash tests, which together with thousands of digital simulations, have played a fundamental role in advancing vehicle safety technologies and enhancing the protection of people across Stellantis brands worldwide.

Today Emanuele Cappellano, COO Stellantis Enlarged Europe, visited the Orbassano Safety Center as it celebrates 50 years of continuous activity. Established in 1976, the Center has grown into one of the most experienced and comprehensive automotive safety facilities in the world, driven by advanced engineering research, technological innovation and the constant development of new testing capabilities.

Spanning 110,000 square meters, the Orbassano Safety Center is distinguished by four dedicated crash test tracks with four impact points, supported by a full suite of static and dynamic test equipment. These enable in-depth analysis of critical safety scenarios including pedestrian impact, roof crush and rollover resistance, covering both regulatory and real-world conditions.

This infrastructure, among the most advanced of its kind globally, has recently been enhanced with a computer‑controlled camera positioning system featuring 13 mobile units focused on the impact zone. The facility also enables high‑speed underbody video capture and the installation of up to five onboard cameras, delivering unprecedented level of insight into crash dynamics.

This combination of physical testing and integrated digital engineering processes allows the Center to analyze virtually any accident scenario and accurately reproduce it in virtual environment. The result is industry‑leading efficiency in development time and resource use, while maintaining the highest standards of technical accuracy and validation quality.

Thanks to these capabilities, vehicles tested in Orbassano can be certified as compliant with more than 175 international safety and technology standards, including markets operating under self‑certification frameworks, where deep technical expertise and strict adherence to test procedures are essential.

The Orbassano Safety Center also serves as a reference facility for restraint‑system, including seatbelts and airbags, as well as component‑level testing of body structures, doors, seats, dashboards and other critical elements. Beyond vehicle development, these certified results provide valuable technical insights for suppliers, contributing to continuous improvement across the automotive safety value chain.

As Emanuele Cappellano stated: “Today we celebrate the first 50 years of a facility whose mission has always been to protect people by advancing vehicle safety. The Orbassano Safety Center represents an example of engineering excellence and innovation, that continues to set standards within Stellantis and across the industry”.

The Orbassano Safety Center is part of an integrated, global safety network, which also includes Safety Centers in Belchamps (France), Chelsea (Michigan), and Betim (Brazil).
