Marvin V. Blake Traces Sisterhood, Identity, and Survival Across a Divided America in Why
Author Marvin V. Blake releases “Why,” an epic historical novel that spans 1838 to 1863 and confronts the brutal realities of race, power, and belonging in pre-Civil War America. Through the intertwined lives of two sisters born into the same plantation world yet separated by law and blood, Blake delivers a sweeping story that asks what love can survive when a society builds its rules on cruelty.
Set on Virginia’s wealthy Rosewood Plantation, “Why” follows two girls born in 1847, just three days apart. Rebecca, the white daughter of Henry and Margaret Billings, grows up as the child of privilege in one of the richest cotton plantations in the state. Mandy, a Black girl born to Henry Billings and one of his enslaved women, grows up under bondage. The sisters share early life experiences, yet the world forces them into opposing roles, one as a mistress and one as an enslaved person.
When Henry and Margaret Billings hire Miss Eleanor Leary, a young progressive Irish immigrant and recent college graduate, to tutor their children, a dangerous line begins to blur. Eleanor fears the laws that forbid teaching enslaved people to read and write. Yet, she chooses to include Mandy at Rebecca’s request. Literacy changes everything. Mandy begins to shed the racial inferiority and self-loathing imposed on her since birth and replaces it with developing pride, self-respect, and personal strength.
As the nation moves toward conflict, the novel places the sisters in three coexisting worlds that define nineteenth-century America. Blake portrays the privileged planter society of the antebellum South, the oppressed communities of enslaved people, and the nomadic hunter- gatherer society of the Plains Indians. The turbulence of the era forces both sisters to move through these cultures, confront their costs, and face choices that reshape their lives. One sister must decide between lifelong devotion to her sibling and a love that grows between her and a Comanche warrior.
“Why” is now available on Amazon.
