Alstom will deliver signalling solutions in the Łódź high-speed tunnel in Poland
The design and installation of the railway traffic control system in the long-distance tunnel in Łódź is of strategic importance for the safety and reliability of the entire investment.

Alstom, a global leader in intelligent and sustainable mobility, has signed a contract with PORR for the execution of works related to the installation of railway traffic control devices in the newly constructed long-distance tunnel in Łódź. The investment is a key part of railway line no. 85, that is, the railway “Y”, which by 2032 will connect Warsaw and the new national airport (being built as part of the Port Polska programme by CPK) with Łódź, and in 2035 will enable the launch of the fastest High-Speed Rail connections to Wrocław and Poznań.
Alstom is responsible for the comprehensive design and construction of signaling solutions in the tunnel, as well as its integration into the area of Łódź Widzew station. These solutions are part of Alstom’s Onvia™ mainline signalling portfolio, connecting customers to a global product family that is innovating to set new standards and futureproof railway operations. This is the first signalling contract carried out by Alstom under the high-speed rail infrastructure associated with the development of the Port Polska investment programme. The signed contract with PORR, General Contractor of the HSR tunnel in Łódź, is yet another recent contract concluded between PORR and Alstom in the area of cooperation on demanding infrastructure projects.
The design and installation of the railway traffic control system in the long-distance tunnel in Łódź is of strategic importance for the safety and reliability of the entire investment. In its execution, we will use the many years of experience of our Katowice team of qualified engineers in designing and implementing control systems, gained both in Poland and through international projects across Europe. The tunnel in Łódź will have a diameter of 14 meters and a length of 4.6 km. It will be the longest and largest diameter railway tunnel structure in Poland. Trains will pass through the city center at a depth of between 25 and 35 meters. The investment is part of the trans-European North Sea – Baltic Sea corridor within the TEN-T transport network.
Alstom has successfully delivered modern signalling solutions for high-speed lines in many countries, including the Bologna–Florence line (up to 300 km/h), one of the most advanced railway routes in Europe. On the 91-kilometre section, of which more than 80% runs in tunnels, the most modern ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 technology by Alstom was implemented. This system ensures continuous train-to-track communication, real-time speed monitoring and increased safety, whilst also boosting network capacity and interoperability.
Alstom’s experience on the Polish market includes, among others, the first implementation of the ERTMS Level 2 system, construction of the ERTMS Level 2 system on ten PKP PLK railway lines, construction of more than 30 centralized traffic control systems (CTC), equipping over 220 stations with computer-based interlocking systems, and the modernization of more than 1,700 level crossing signalling systems.
