Anne Ward Crocker’s “Close Friends’ Cathedral Adventure” Brings Woodland Wonders to the London Book Fair

A native of Cambridge, Maryland, now living in Winchester, Virginia, Anne Ward Crocker has spent a lifetime exploring the natural world and turning its magic into stories that delight young readers. Drawing on decades of observing plants and wildlife, her work with the Virginia Native Plant Society and the C&O Canal Association, and countless Audubon Christmas Bird Censuses, Crocker brings her experiences to life in her latest children’s book, “Close Friends’ Cathedral Adventure”. The story follows Peat, a toad, and Paul-Paulette, an earthworm, who live beneath the roots of their friend Christy, a Christmas fern.

When Peat and Paul-Paulette are unexpectedly dug up and carried to the cathedral’s Festival of Flowers, they must navigate unfamiliar surroundings with help from their wildflower companions. Along the way, Peat experiences discovery and separation in the Garth—a small garden at the cathedral’s base—offering moments of suspense, humor, and gentle life lessons drawn from Crocker’s lifelong love of nature, community, and the cherished spaces of the cathedral.

“Close Friends’ Cathedral Adventure” invites young readers to explore curiosity, friendship, and the beauty of the natural world. Crocker’s storytelling weaves whimsy, adventure, and meticulous attention to detail, creating a narrative that is both entertaining and educational.
