  • Alstom will carry out the maintenance of the railway signalling system of Line 1 of the Quito Metro
  • The service reinforces the company’s commitment to Ecuador and consolidates its strategic presence in Latin America

Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, announced that it has signed a contract to provide preventive and corrective maintenance of the railway signalling system of Line 1 of the Quito Metro, as well as obsolescence management and potential upgrades. Alstom also previously designed and implemented the CITYFLO 350 signalling system for Line 1. The contract, valued at 27 million dollars (around 23 million euros), will run for 48 months. Alstom will start the work in March 2026.

According to Bernard Peille, Alstom’s Vice President for Latin America, this agreement strengthens the company’s progress in the country: “When signalling works properly, the trains run safely and on time, just like when your brain is working well, you walk down the street safely, without even thinking about it. Our commitment is to deliver a service so excellent that no one has to think about it and just knows that they can rely on an efficient, safe, and sustainable railway system. Projects such as the Quito Metro demonstrate Ecuador’s strategic importance for our company and reinforce our focus on solutions that support urban development and people’s quality of life.”

Line 1 provides an important new spine of mobility to Quito, connecting neighbourhoods, reducing travel times, and contributing to more sustainable urban transport. The signalling system is the nervous system of the line; its maintenance is essential to being able to run a high-frequency transit system at the expected levels of safety and reliability.

The project will involve Ecuadorian technical teams, reinforcing Alstom’s commitment to generating qualified jobs, promoting knowledge transfer, professional training, and the development of local talent.

In Quito’s Line 1, Alstom will be responsible for frequent inspections and continuous monitoring; rapid corrective interventions to avoid service interruptions; ensuring high availability of control systems; and improving operational reliability and passenger experience.

These activities ensure that the system operates with designed performance, safety, and regularity — a standard that Alstom applies across several markets in Latin American, where it has extensive experience in the maintenance, modernization, and operation of signalling systems, including Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Panama. The company holds the largest installed signalling base in the region, with over 6,000 km of signalled lines and more than 2,000 onboard systems in operation.

Alstom Ecuador

Alstom has a solid presence in Ecuador, contributing directly to the development of sustainable mobility in the country. On Line 1 of the Quito Metro, the company implemented the CITYFLO 350 signalling system and will now also undertake preventive and corrective maintenance of the infrastructure.

The company also played a key role in the Cuenca Tramway, supplying Citadis trams as well as the electrification systems for this project, which serves around 25,000 passengers per day.
