ACCIONA Energía installs solar system to decarbonize GrafTech’s Navarra facility

ACCIONA Energía has completed the installation of an on-site photovoltaic generation and consumption system at the production facility of GrafTech, a global leader in the manufacturing of graphite materials, in Ororbia (Navarra).

The facility, which became operational in mid-February, has a capacity of 1.56 MWp and will generate approximately 2GWh of renewable electricity per year. Given the high energy demand of the production facility, the system has been designed for full on-site consumption, with no electricity exported to the grid.

The agreement reached between the two companies establishes a 15-year on-site PPA under an “energy-as-a-service” model, whereby GrafTech contracts the long-term supply of renewable electricity, while ACCIONA Energía undertakes the necessary investment to install, operate and maintain the system. This model allows GrafTech to progress toward decarbonization and energy cost optimization with no upfront investment.

The photovoltaic system has been installed over an area of approximately 11,500 square meters, making use of the roofs of industrial buildings and parking canopies. The facility incorporates more than 2,300 high-efficiency bifacial modules, which generate electricity from both sides of the panel, distributed across various types of mounting structures.

In addition, ACCIONA Energía has replaced a fiber cement roof with corrugated metal sheeting, in line with GrafTech’s phased plan to eliminate this material.

Through this project, GrafTech reinforces its sustainability strategy and makes further progress toward decarbonizing its operations. The company actively promotes energy efficiency, emissions reduction and the progressive increase in the use of renewable electricity, contributing to a more sustainable industrial value chain.
