Why it works:

  • Emotional storytelling, bonding, responsibility
  • Great for summer reading lists
  • Strong resonance with families and animal-focused media

Perfect for toddlers through age ten, the book introduces fun and educational topics such as holidays, dental health, fire safety, animals, and dinosaurs. Its short, easy-to-follow poems help children build early reading skills while holding their attention—making it ideal for summer reading programs, library storytimes, and family reading sessions.

Patricia Herber’s belief in rhyming as a key literacy tool shines throughout the collection. The rhythmic language supports phonemic awareness, encourages interactive read-alouds, and helps children gain confidence as readers. Families can enjoy sharing the poems together, turning reading into a fun daily habit during school breaks.

With playful illustrations and a light, educational tone, “Butterflies, Bears, and Other Poems for Children” is a perfect addition to public libraries, summer camps, and family literacy initiatives. It makes summer reading an experience filled with laughter, learning, and lasting memories.

“Butterflies, Bears, and Other Poems for Children,” along with the Course Pack, Literary Guide, and Teacher’s Lesson Plan, are available on Amazon.

The collection also supports broader themes of community helpers and public awareness, making it perfect for after-school programs and summer camps. Program leaders can incorporate the poems into daily reading sessions, reinforcing both literacy and life skills in a fun, interactive format.

About the Author

Patricia Herber, the middle child in a family of eight, fondly remembers growing up with Mother Goose rhymes and jumping rope to playful chants. Today, she brings that same joy to children as the author of “Butterflies, Bears, and Other Poems for Children,” a collection of rhyming poems inspired by her years teaching first grade.

Her poems, filled with fun facts and colorful illustrations, help children learn while exploring topics like teddy bears, butterflies, dinosaurs, holidays, and everyday lessons about fire safety, dental care, and more. Patricia wrote in rhyme to revive a tradition she feels is fading, believing it helps children build vocabulary, spark imagination, and enjoy meaningful time with parents or grandparents away from screens.

The book’s title reflects her love of butterflies and bears—monarchs that visit her garden and playful bear cubs that inspired her poems. Highlights include Monarch Queen, Bear Cubs, and Teddy Bears.

Patricia holds a B.S. in Elementary Education from Shippensburg University and a master’s from Penn State University. A retired first-grade teacher from Pine Grove Area School District, she lives in Pine Grove, PA, with her husband, Larry, and their two grown children and five grandchildren, for whom the book is dedicated. In retirement, she enjoys traveling, reading, attending school events, and nurturing a lifelong love of reading in her grandchildren.
