Education remains a key pillar of Alstom’s Community Investment Policy, and this commitment was recently demonstrated through the donation of 818 school uniforms to learners across three primary schools in Nigel and Duduza townships in South Africa. The initiative supports vulnerable communities by promoting inclusive learning environments, easing financial pressure on families, and helping learners focus on their academic development.

The three beneficiary schools; Alra Park and Happiness Primary in Nigel, and Sibonisiwe Primary in Duduza serve learners from grade R to grade seven, many of whom come from households reliant on government welfare grants. “For many struggling families, the start of the school year brings significant financial pressure. School uniforms, which play a vital role in a child’s sense of belonging, are often unaffordable, and we had to assist,” said Zaibonisha Turkey, Corporate Social Responsibility Champion for Alstom Southern Africa.

Speaking at the handover, Lerato Banda, a learner from Alra Park primary said; “Your donation has given us and our parents so much joy. Thank you for boosting our self-esteem and sense of belonging.” Beneficiary school principals added that Alstom’s support brought smiles to their learners and reinforced the value of giving; promoted equality in the classroom, encouraged academic focus and its impact will last far into the future.

Alstom Ubunye CEO, Thabiso Komako remarked: “We invested more than one million rand into this education‑focused initiative because we are committed to creating sustainable, long-term impact in our neighbouring communities. A school uniform is not just a piece of clothing, it restores dignity, levels the playing field, and supports the development of our future leaders.”

Corporate social responsibility is embedded in Alstom’s identity and operations. As part of delivering future ready rail systems, the company remains dedicated to improving the lives and economic prospects of communities around its facilities in South Africa.
