Today, adidas premieres the fourth episode of its docuseries, Illuminated, featuring the world’s most decorated female skier, Mikaela Shiffrin, as told by her mother, Eileen.

Chronicling the deeply personal journey of alpine skier Mikaela, the episode highlights Eileen’s dual role, as both her mother and one of her longstanding coaches, through the highs and lows of Mikaela’s trailblazing career.

From Mikaela’s emergence as a teenage prodigy through to her historic 100th World Cup race victory in February 2025, the episode provides fresh insight into life on the slopes for an athlete at the pinnacle of her sport, and the mentality and resilience it has taken to make it through life’s greatest challenges.

The multi-faceted mother-daughter relationship features alongside powerful discussions on Mikaela’s battle to overcome the toughest of setbacks, from the unexpected passing of her beloved father to her serious crash during competition in Killington, and the value of Eileen’s support throughout it all.

Directed by David Terry Fine (Untold: Netflix and ESPN: 30 for 30) and Stanley Brock (Road to Kampala: Copa 90 and Hanna), training footage is complemented by a range of intimate moments between Mikaela and Eileen at home and on the road. The pair explore some of the underappreciated challenges of life as an elite skier, from the inherent risks of racing to the months away from home during the season.

Reflecting on the importance of their relationship, Mikaela Shiffrin said: “I feel really lucky that we’ve been doing this together since day one. My mom’s skiing journey inspired my own, and she has been there for me every step of the way, both on and off the slopes. She has guided me through all the hardships and given me that strength and desire to keep fighting and pushing. My mom has not only provided me with the greatest possible support system but also instilled a deep-seated belief that has helped me recover from injury and improve. Without her I simply wouldn’t be me.”

Reflecting on Mikaela’s success and her unique role in it, Eileen Shiffrin said: “It is the greatest honor to play both the role of mother and coach in Mikaela’s life. Whether we are preparing for a race or relaxing at home, we have a special relationship that I truly cherish. Mikaela has had to deal with so much adversity in her life and I’m just so proud of how she has come back stronger every time. Being by her side to witness her success makes it all worthwhile.”
