A Poet’s Journey From Cockpits to Couplets

Stewart Monti was born in 1951 in the Appalachian mountains of Bland, Virginia. A military brat, he spent part of his childhood at his grandmother’s home while his father served in the Korean War. Monti attended military high school and graduated from the United States Air Force Academy, later flying C-130E aircraft for 2,000 hours worldwide and completing a range of Air Force roles before retiring as a Major.

He earned two master’s degrees and went on to teach at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on both graduate and undergraduate levels of experience that sharpened his clarity, structure, and command of voice. But poetry was always there: early booklets passed among social clubs, regular readings for local organizations, and poems that found their way into everyday public life displayed in a church thrift shop, a friend’s hair salon, church kitchens, a railway museum, and homes throughout the Greater Sanford, North Carolina area, where he now lives with his wife and son.

Monti’s first collection, 135 Poems for Today (2017), introduced readers to his accessible, resonant style. With “Mary and Sir Edward,” he takes that voice into the story, shaping a narrative that feels timeless, intimate, and built for readers who love language that moves.
