Marking 120 years since his passing, BBC Four and iPlayer are celebrating Henrik Ibsen, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in modern drama and the second-most produced and adapted playwright in the world after William Shakespeare with a series of film adaptations of some of his most influential plays.

Through plays that are still staged and studied globally, Ibsen reshaped drama into a powerful art form - one that confronts social norms, explores human psychology, and invites audiences to question their world.

Every Sunday at 10pm until Sunday 29 March, BBC Four and iPlayer are showcasing a total of 13 adaptions of a variety of Ibsen plays made by the BBC over 40 years ranging from a 1953 adaption of The Lady from the Sea to A Doll’s House from 1992, with most not seen on the BBC since their original broadcasts.

Ahead of the first adaption in the season multi award-winning film, theatre, television and opera director Richard Eyre introduced both the season and Hedda Gabler from 1962 starring Ingrid Bergman). As director and writer of three stage adaptions from original texts himself, Richard reflects on the enduring relevance of his work and what audiences might discover seeing his work for the first time.

On Sunday 8 February from 10pm, Trevor Eve, Juliet Stevenson and David Thacker reunite to reflect on the 1992 adaption of A Doll’s House in which Trevor and Juliet starred and David directed sharing the passionate, personal interpretations that shaped their unforgettable performances.

All the adaptions featured in the season are available to stream via BBC iPlayer now. In addition, docu-dramas Summer in Gossensass (from 1964) and Certainties and Doubts (from 1979) that depict aspects of Ibsen’s own life, are also available to allow for a further, deeper insight into the man himself.
