The 50th edition of Retromobile, the prestigious show dedicated to classic cars opens today in Paris. Once again this year, it offers a packed schedule of events, all taking place at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. It is one of the biggest events in international vintage motoring, a constantly growing segment that pervades contemporary society across the board, adding value to the modern car sector.
One of its leading lights is the Alfa Romeo brand, which – together with the Stellantis Heritage department and the Alfa Romeo Classiche division – preserves, protects and promotes a heritage of Italian technical, sporting and stylistic excellence, still a source of inspiration for the future. Through February 1, visitors to the Alfa Romeo stand (located in Hall 7.2) will have the opportunity to admire the 1600 Spider “Duetto” (1966) – celebrating its 60th anniversary this year – and the very rare 750 Competizione (1955), which remained in the prototype phase with only two units produced; and finally, the 33/2 Periscopica (1967), the forerunner of the “33” family. Alongside these rarities, there is also the New Tonale, the evolution of the brand’s first C-SUV. It has evolved in terms of its character and sportiness, based on the refinement of its excellent dynamic qualities, for an Alfa Romeo driving experience.
The Alfa Romeo stand was created as a true journey of the senses – “Roads of Emotion” – spanning over a century of the brand’s history, intertwining the charm of heritage with the visionary force of the present. An itinerary marked by a single, unmistakable common thread: the authentic pleasure of driving.
On stage, the cars are set out on four “roads,” as symbols of the same number of emotional and stylistic universes. Each one speaks of a nuance of the Alfa Romeo soul, but together they breathe life into a collective tale of the Italian spirit, sporting passion and the color red, the greatest embodiment of the brand’s intensity. From the Duetto – a timeless icon of the Italian lifestyle – and the new Tonale with its emotions that defy definition, to the legendary stars of racing: each model is one stage in a journey through design, character and identity.
Everything converges around a single focus: the driver. The Alfa Romeo driving experience is not just movement, it is a deep vibration, a perfect synthesis of passion, performance and beauty that transcends time. One of those rare moments when the car is no longer a means of transportation, but pure emotion.
As well as the cars on show, visitors to the stand can also discover the Alfa Romeo Classiche program, the Stellantis Heritage initiative dedicated to the Biscione brand’s classic cars, whose objective is to preserve, certify and enhance the brand’s historical heritage. Aimed at owners of vintage and collector’s cars, the program provides services dedicated to Alfa Romeo enthusiasts, including the Certificate of Origin, a document that takes the chassis number as a starting point, resulting in customers receiving the production configuration of their car using information kept at the Alfa Romeo Documentation Center, the in-house official archive. Its other services consist of the Certificate of Authenticity, a process whereby a request can be made for an in-depth technical appraisal, conducted by Stellantis Heritage and its Alfa Romeo Classiche specialists and brand experts, to verify that the car has maintained its original features over time and thus obtain official certification; as well as restoration, maintenance and repair work carried out by the same team that takes care of the company’s prestigious collection.
Finally, Alfa Romeo Classiche offers the Reloaded By Creators program: historic models with certified authenticity, restored to their original beauty directly by the parent company. These models include the 4C – Collezione GT “Nicola Larini,” a project that reaffirms the unbreakable bond between Alfa Romeo and Nicola Larini, the 1993 DTM champion: three collector’s 4Cs customized with the driver’s signature on the bonnet and dashboard, specific upholstery and white accents on the front and tail.
1600 Spider “Duetto”
Alfa Romeo management, eager to go beyond the obsolescent lines of the Giulietta Spider, commissioned Pininfarina to design a new roadster powered by the 1570-cc Giulia engine. This gave rise in 1966 to the 1600 Spider, featuring highly rounded, distinctive shapes. To name the car, Alfa Romeo management launched a public competition: of the various proposals made, the jury selected “Duetto.” Although “Duetto” was not officially adopted for copyright reasons, the name remained in the popular imagination with another monicker in Italian, “osso di seppia” (‘cuttlefish bone’), to emphasize the roundness of the tail. The 1600 Spider gained further fame from the movie The Graduate, in which a young Dustin Hoffman drove a red Duetto under the Californian sun with the iconic track “Mrs. Robinson” playing in the background. In the United States, its success even led to a special series known as “Graduate.” The model on display in Paris is usually on show at the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum in Arese.
33/2 Periscopica
The car on show is the forerunner of the “33” family, the beginning of a triumphant story that unfolded over a decade, marked by prestigious victories (24 Hours of Le Mans and Targa Florio) and world titles in 1975 and 1977. Developed by Autodelta, the 33/2 debuted on March 12, 1967, in an uphill race held in the industrial area of Fléron, near Liège in Belgium. After its presentation to the press – attended by company executives led by Luraghi – the new Alfa Romeo 33/2 faced its baptism of fire: the car had a large air intake on the roof, earning it the nickname “Periscopica.” At the wheel was Autodelta’s chief test driver, Teodoro Zeccoli. It couldn’t have been a better debut: the 33/2 finished first, ahead of fierce competition. The engine fitted to the car on display is the renowned 2-liter V8-90°. The model on show at Retromobile 2026 belongs to the Scuderia del Portello.
750 Competizione
The Alfa Romeo 750 Competizione was built in 1955, with a possible view to taking part in the “1500-cc” category of the “Sport” competitions. It is equipped with an updated version of the in-line Giulietta engine with four double camshafts, with its displacement increased to 1488 cc. The chassis – made of welded sheet steel, built by Abarth and with a body designed by Boano – diverged considerably from the Alfa Romeo style of the time. The project remained in the prototype phase, with only two units produced. Usually based at the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum in Arese, the car on show at Rétromobile has taken part in several international vintage car events, including the 1000 Miglia and the famous Goodwood Festival of Speed.
New Tonale
Visitors to Retromobile 2026 can admire a New Tonale, in the Sport Speciale version with Rosso Brera livery. The ultimate interpretation of the new model’s contemporary sportiness, it stands out for its top-of-the-line specifications and equipment: the utmost exterior and interior look.
The standout features are its 20” diamond-cut alloy wheels, silver accents on the side skirts and rear bumper, gloss-black Brembo brake calipers, and white Alfa Romeo lettering; inside, the exclusive seats in black and white Alcantara, dashboard fascia upholstered in Alcantara, contrasting white stitching and ambient lights with specific visuals on the dashboard.
The New Tonale is the evolution of the brand’s first C-SUV, renewing its sporty character and the unmistakable charm of Italian design. It serves as even more of a refinement of its dynamic qualities; it offers an authentically Alfa Romeo driving experience thanks to its perfect weight balance, the most direct steering in the segment, dedicated high-performance Brembo brakes and DSV electronic suspension. The Tonale’s bodywork is even more iconic, with its sculpted proportions and a wider wheel track, while the new front end features the new concave badge and the revised trilobe, giving it a more decisive character. The 19 and 20-inch wheels are also new and interpret Alfa Romeo’s stylistic heritage with a contemporary flair, conveying strength and dynamism.
The interior has also been updated in terms of style and further improved in perceived quality, with refined combinations in red leather or two-tone black and white Alcantara. The concept of personalization evolves too in its color palette, enriched with three new metallic colors – Rosso Brera, Verde Monza and Giallo Ocra – bringing the number of customization options to eight, further expanded by the choice of the contrasting black roof.
When it comes to tech, its innovative vocation is confirmed by fully digital instrumentation with dual 12.3" and 10.25" displays, combined with the new multicolored ambient light on the dashboard, wireless connectivity, and Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. Level 2 driver assistance systems and a 360° camera elevate the driving experience, while ventilated and heated seats and the 470-W Harman Kardon premium audio system with 14 speakers and a subwoofer ensure superior comfort.
The new Tonale is arriving on the market with a wide range of engines, to meet all of its customers’ requirements: 1.6 Diesel delivering 130 hp with 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, 1.5 Hybrid for 175 hp with 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and 1.3 Plug-In Hybrid Q4 four-wheel drive with 270 hp and 6-speed automatic transmission.
