Schneider Electric’s Wuhan factory named one of only three global lighthouses for talent by World Economic Forum
Schneider Electric, the global energy technology leader, announced that its Wuhan factory in China has been recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Global Lighthouse for Talent - one of only three sites worldwide to earn this distinction.
The Global Lighthouse Network is a World Economic Forum initiative recognizing best-in-class operational sites and value chains that have achieved exceptional performance in productivity, supply chain resilience, customer centricity, sustainability and talent. The initiative was co-founded with McKinsey & Company and is counselled by an advisory board of industry leaders working together to shape the future of global manufacturing.
A newly introduced category, the Talent designation identifies operational sites that achieve transformative impact on the workforce through advanced solutions in work design and safety, talent planning, attraction and onboarding, development, and effectiveness.
The Wuhan factory is Schneider Electric’s ninth Lighthouse globally and its first recognized for Talent, complementing eight other Lighthouse factories and distribution centers worldwide including five Sustainability Lighthouses.
A strategic hub in Schneider Electric’s China supply chain and a model for industrial digitalization, the Wuhan faced significant workforce challenges driven by rapid automation and a 239% product portfolio expansion. Initially, only 20% of employees were skilled in automation, onboarding took 75 days, and technician turnover reached 48%.
Over the past five years, the factory increased automation by 55% and expanded its product portfolio by 239%, creating critical talent gaps: initially, only 20% of employees were skilled in automation, onboarding took 75 days, and technician turnover reached 48%.
To address these challenges, Schneider Electric implemented a future-ready, people-centric workforce model combining technology, partnerships, and continuous learning:
-
Future-ready Talent Pipeline : Partnered with 11 vocational schools to deliver digital apprenticeships, AI labs, and scholarships, creating a sustainable skills pipeline.
-
AI-driven Competency Management : Agentic AI identified tracked skill gaps and assigned personalized training, supported by with “pay-for-skills” career paths. Workforce readiness jumped from 20% to 76% and 56% of employees were upskilled.
-
People-Centric Scheduling : Optimized task allocation reduced overtime and improved delivery performance.
-
GenAI-Assisted Maintenance : Smart guidance and mentor-pairing cut repair time and reduced technician turnover from 48% to 6%.
- AI-Powered New Product Introduction Acceleration : Automated repetitive tasks, freeing engineers for high-value work and shortened new product introduction cycles by 66.7%. New product introduction lead time reduced from 36 to 12 months.
“The Fourth Industrial Revolution is about people as much as technology,” said Mourad Tamoud, Chief Supply Chain Officer, Schneider Electric. “At Wuhan, we’ve shown that when AI and human potential work together, organizations can build resilient, agile, and future-ready workforces—while ensuring technology serves its ultimate purpose: delivering more value to customers.”
“Competitiveness today is no longer defined by efficiency alone, but by the ability to sense, adapt and respond at speed,” said Kiva Allgood, Managing Director, World Economic Forum. “This year’s industrial transformation sites show how intelligence-led operations are being scaled to place resilience and sustainability at the core of how industry operates.”
This achievement reflects Schneider Electric’s commitment to developing future-ready talent, building an agile organization, and fostering a culture that empowers people and drives innovation.
