“The Little Brown Hen” upgrades the classic “The Little Red Hen” and will be Free to Download Tomorrow (1/8/26)
“The Little Brown Hen” is a new twist in an old classic fable. In the old story, “The Little Red Hen” toils over growing wheat and painstakingly harvesting it for bread. While she asks for help from other barn animals, all the animals refuse. When it comes time for the bread to come out of the oven, naturally the animals want in on the reward of her labor. Instead she refuses, reasoning that if she did everything herself, she would also keep the eating to herself. The old story is great at teaching the importance of hard work, personal responsibility, and setting boundaries. However, there are more key lessons of leadership and teamwork that the old story leaves wanting.
“The Little Brown Hen” is an answer to the need for new lessons for a new day. “The Little Brown Hen” meets “old Red” and teachers her a few valuable lessons, helping her connect better with those around her. Leigh Sloan, author of the groundbreaking cultural commentary “Pride and Privilege: expand your influence in cultural chaos,” brings us this refreshing cultural shift made for children and loved by people of all ages.
Through a deceptively simple presentation with beautiful illustrations by an upcoming Alaskan artist, Maggie Joy, “The Little Brown Hen” helps people of all ages grapple with the powerful life wisdom of recognizing the treasure in others and calling them to a greater purpose.
In creating this book, Sloan realized that many of our old fables are in need of updates to help us grapple with new lessons more applicable in a new generation. This is the first in her planned “reFabled” series that will bring powerful new concepts from some of our most beloved classics.
This book is currently free and available for digital download for 5 days (from January 8 until January 12, 2026) and currently at a full 5 star rating on Amazon. Get your copy here.
A free companion lesson plan for elementary students may be found at refabled.co.
Proceeds from 2026 will go toward the Alaska School Choice nonprofit, which will help provide scholarships for Alaskan students in need. Leigh Sloan hopes “The Little Brown Hen” will inspire a new generation of leaders to see the value of others and galvanize our personal connections for the greater good.
