Aston Villa star Rogers voted Player of the Matchweek

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers has been voted Player of the Matchweek for Matchweek 17.

Rogers’ irresistible run of form continued with two superb goals in Villa’s 2-1 home win over Manchester United, a result which left his team only three points off top spot in the Premier League. It was their seventh consecutive victory in the league, and 10th in a row across all competitions.

The England international is at the very top of his game right now and his brace — an unstoppable finish in the first half and a sublime curler in the second — made him the first Villa player since Dion Dublin in 1998 to score at least twice in back-to-back Premier League matches.

Rogers pipped his closest challenger in our online poll, Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, by just two per cent of the vote, winning 29 to 27.

The other six nominees were Erling Haaland (19 per cent), Reece James (12 per cent), Nick Woltemade (five per cent), Keane Lewis-Potter (four per cent), Dan Ballard and Anton Stach (both two per cent).

As Rogers is the first Villa star to be voted Player of the Matchweek, it means this season’s winners have now come from eight different clubs, the others being Arsenal, Chelsea, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester City, Man Utd and Tottenham Hotspur.
