CaixaBank lights up one of the most iconic Christmas locations in Spain: Madrid’s Plaza Mayor. Due to its size and technical features, this is the largest light installation ever displayed on a building facade in the capital’s Plaza Mayor. More than one million people are expected to visit Madrid’s main square during the Christmas season, and to enjoy CaixaBank’s light show, which will run until the 7th of January.

The installation consists of a spectacular LED mesh that covers the entire facade of the historic building known as the “Casa de la Carnicería” (Butcher Shop House), on the southern side of the square, where the Hotel Pestana Plaza Mayor is currently located. The building, part of the city centre’s heritage ensemble, preserves the monumental character and architectural essence of the 17th century.

Throughout the Christmas season, every evening from 18:00, CaixaBank will project animated illustrations linked to special Christmas items and moments such as Christmas markets, New Year’s resolutions, dinners with the beloved ones, memories from those who are far away, and, of course,  the popular ‘churros with chocolate’ sold around the Plaza Mayor.

These animations are made possible thanks to a large-scale installation featuring 370 garlands, totalling nearly 100,000 next-generation leds, which offer luminous power with low energy consumption. In addition, 70 Twinkly-technology special modules have been manufactured, which enable the “smart” use of lights for complex visual projections. The installation also includes 60 controllers to configure the display mapping.

The project has been made possible thanks to the collaboration with the Madrid City Council and the Hotel Pestana Plaza Mayor.

CaixaBank, standing by people for everything that matters

This spectacular Christmas initiative is inspired by CaixaBank’s commitment to stand by its customers and society at major events. For the bank, being part of such a deeply rooted tradition as the strolling through the Madrid’s Plaza Mayor during the Christmas season is another way to be close to people and to offer them a memorable souvenir through a dazzling light show.
