NFL-Championed Drone Safety Law Will Protect Fans Nationwide
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell released the following statement on the National Defense Authorization Act, which includes a bipartisan provision giving state and local law enforcement the authority to protect fans from rogue drones.
“We thank President Trump and our Congressional champions from both political parties who took decisive action to keep fans safe. With a rising number of drones flying in restricted airspace, it is critical that state and local law enforcement have the tools to prevent harm. This important step will help protect fans at stadiums across the country.”
Background
- During the 2024 season, 2,300 drones were detected around NFL stadiums in violation of the game day Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs).
- Under current law, only the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) or U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can provide counter-drone protection.
- These federal law enforcement agencies provide counter-drone mitigation at the Super Bowl. All other NFL games are protected by state and local law enforcement.
- The law signed today would allow state and local law enforcement to engage in drone mitigation activity to protect critical infrastructure and mass gatherings such as a major sporting event.
