Siemens battery trains are fit for a King!
- Seven Mireo Plus B trains for Midtjyske Jernbaner to enter passenger service
- First fleet of Mireo Plus B battery-powered trains outside of Germany
- Inauguration ceremony attended by H.M. King Frederik of Denmark
Siemens Mobility and the Danish operator Midtjyske Jernbaner are celebrating a historic milestone for Denmark’s green transition. On December 19, 2025, H.M. King Frederik officially inaugurated the country’s first battery-powered trains. Seven Mireo Plus B trains from Siemens Mobility will now enter passenger service on the Holstebro-Skjern and Vemb-Lemvig-Thyborøn lines, replacing the old diesel fleet and providing quiet, emission-free rail transport in the West Jutland region.
The deployment of these battery-powered trains marks a significant step in Denmark’s efforts to decarbonize its public transport system. For Midtjyske Jernbaner, it fulfills the ambitious goal of becoming Denmark’s greenest railway. The new trains offer commuters and families in West Jutland a significantly improved travel experience with modern amenities, higher frequency, and increased capacity.
Thomas Graetz, Head of Commuter and Regional Trains at Siemens Mobility: "The launch of our Mireo Plus B trains in Denmark is a landmark achievement. It not only marks the first time our battery-powered trains will operate outside of Germany but also demonstrates how our technology provides a sustainable and efficient solution for non-electrified routes. We are proud to partner with Midtjyske Jernbaner to drive the green transformation of the Danish rail system and offer passengers a quiet, comfortable, and emission-free travel experience"
“Six years ago, when we decided to replace our diesel trains with more climate-friendly alternatives, we knew very little about the technology. Today, we are proud to launch Denmark’s first battery-powered train. It has been a long and exciting journey, and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Siemens Mobility for the excellent collaboration,” says Martha Vrist, CEO of Midtjyske Jernbaner
The Mireo Plus B two-car trainsets offer seating for 127 passengers, a top speed of 140 km/h, and a battery-powered range of about 80 kilometers. It features a battery-hybrid drive and can be charged via the 25kV overhead line in electrified sections. On non-electrified routes, the batteries power the train, enabling completely CO2-emission-free and low-noise operation. The fleet for Midtjyske Jernbaner will offer passengers a significantly improved travel experience with modern amenities such as Wi-Fi and passenger information systems, increased comfort, and higher capacity. The trains feature a lightweight, energy-efficient design and are built with sustainable materials. The order, placed in 2022, was the first for Mireo Plus B trains outside of Germany, where the Mireo platform is already a success with over 295 trains in operation.
