Michigan Federation of Teachers and School Related Personnel Statement on the Hay Group Report on School Employee Health Care
DETROIT -- Following is a statement of David Hecker, president of the Michigan Federation of Teachers and School Related Personnel (AFL-CIO), on the Hay Group Report on School Employee Health Care:
Health care costs, quality and access are major issues that must be addressed nationwide. However, the Hay Group report and SB55/56 requiring school employees to participate in a state mandated plan with limited coverage is not the answer.
There are alternatives, including options that involve pooling, that can significantly reduce costs without cutting benefits, allow districts to shop the competition, and preserve collective bargaining.
In mid-August, a white paper, outlining these alternative options will be released.
