ACCIONA is awarded sanitation and water supply networks in 151 municipalities of northeastern Brazil
The concession will last 35 years and will involve an investment of €2.38 billion, which will benefit seven million people.
ACCIONA, in a consortium with local company BRK, has been awarded the contract for the concession of treated water distribution and sewerage services in 151 municipalities of Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil.
The concession will last 35 years and will involve an investment of BRL15.4 billion (€2.38 billion), with the aim of expanding and modernizing the sanitation and water supply infrastructure, thus guaranteeing treated water and the collection and treatment of wastewater for around seven million residents. The initiative is aligned with the goals of Pernambuco’s New Legal Framework for the Integral Water Cycle, which aims for universal access to water (99%) and sewerage (90%) by 2033.
The consortium will be in charge of water distribution and wastewater collection and treatment in these municipalities, while Companhia Pernambucana de Saneamento (Compesa) will remain responsible for the production and sale of treated water to the concessionaire. The contract also provides for gradual water loss reduction targets and mechanisms to address supply interruptions.
THIRD PROJECT
The Pernambuco project is ACCIONA’s third water project in Brazil so far this year.
In January, ACCIONA signed a concession contract with Sanepar (Paraná Sanitation Company) for sanitary sewer services in 48 municipalities in the western and central-eastern micro-regions of the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil. The public-private contract, worth €324 million, covers investment in sanitation infrastructure, including sewerage networks, pumping stations, and wastewater treatment plants, as well as their operation and maintenance for 24 years.
In October, the company signed a concession contract with Companhia Espirito Santense de Saneamento (CESAN) for urban sanitation in eight municipalities in the state of Espirito Santo. The project consists of wastewater treatment and the provision of commercial support services in these municipalities, with planned investments of €85 million over the 23-year contract period.
STRATEGIC MARKET
ACCIONA has been operating in Brazil for more than 25 years. During this period, it has developed various major infrastructure projects, such as Terminal 2 at Porto do Açu (in the state of Rio de Janeiro) and the conversion of the former Júlio Prestes train station in São Paulo into a world-class concert venue. ACCIONA is also currently building Line 6 of the São Paulo subway, the largest infrastructure project in Latin America.
In terms of its experience in sanitation and water treatment, ACCIONA has extensive experience in the country through projects such as the sanitation system (including pipe networks, collectors, pumping stations and a WWTP) in the Alcântara basin in São Gonçalo, the second largest city in the state of Rio de Janeiro; as well as the design, construction, and operational assistance for the wastewater treatment system in Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, in the Pernambuco region of northeastern Brazil. In addition, the company has implemented, operated, and maintained the power cogeneration system at the Arrudas wastewater treatment plant in the state of Minas Gerais
