The new title was born from a reflection on a poem by W.H. Auden once published in Look magazine. As a young teen, the author interpreted the poem as blaming life’s negatives on others. But with maturity came the realization that the “Overfamiliar Dense Companion” Auden described was not someone else—
it was the self.

This revelation, preserved from that original magazine page, runs deeply throughout the themes of the book: identity, self-awareness, accountability, and the strange, often humorous ways life teaches us who we truly are.
