Barclays and Fauna & Flora announce collaboration
Barclays and Fauna & Flora today announce a new collaboration centred on landscape-level restoration – a strategic focus for Fauna & Flora and an area of interest for Barclays as we seek to integrate nature as part of our net zero ambition.
Landscape-level restoration seeks to rebuild ecosystems through large-scale actions coordinated across multiple sites and land holdings and helps to address biodiversity loss and land degradation.
This new collaboration will bring together Barclays, Fauna & Flora, and stakeholders from multiple sectors to exchange ideas on achieving restoration at scale, resulting in a ‘proof of concept’ that will set out practical options for a real-world restoration project.
The work will explore the interventions available to the finance sector to enable restoration efforts at a commercially viable scale, while also examining how diverse sectors can collaborate effectively to achieve shared nature goals. It will identify the appropriate stakeholders across value chains, the governance structures needed to foster cross-sector partnerships, and the practical enablers that will ensure effective collaboration on landscape-level restoration.
The collaboration will also create a ‘community of interest’, a dedicated space to share practical insights, case studies, and emerging tools with a wider network, informed by research into sector-specific nature ambitions and challenges.
Marie Freier, Head of Sustainability, Group, Barclays, said: “Nature is the foundation of our economies and financial systems, underpinning everything from supply chains to long-term value creation and resilience. Through the collaboration with Fauna & Flora, we’re working with clients and other stakeholders across sectors to explore impactful, collaborative solutions that support their nature goals, while identifying innovative financing approaches to scale landscape-level restoration.”
Kristian Teleki, Chief Executive Officer, Fauna & Flora, adds: “At Fauna & Flora, we’ve seen how landscape-level approaches can regenerate ecosystems, strengthen communities, and protect biodiversity. This collaboration with Barclays brings together conservation and finance in a way that’s both innovative and practical. By working collaboratively across sectors, we’re looking to lay the foundations for scalable, replicable models that deliver real-world impact for nature, climate, and people.”
As part of efforts to integrate nature considerations, Barclays recently published Navigating Nature Risk - Applying the TNFD’s LEAP framework. The paper sets out Barclays’ approach to assessing nature-related financial risks of large financial portfolios and outlines pragmatic steps to drive progress.
