Bangladesh has taken a significant step in shaping its national approach to responsible usage of AI with the launching of the AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) Report, a collaborative effort led by the ICT Division with support from UNESCOUNDPa2i and funding from the European Union.

Unveiled in Dhaka, the report provides a comprehensive national picture of Bangladesh’s readiness to adopt AI in ways that protect rights, promote inclusion and strengthen public institutions. It follows months of consultations with government agencies, technical experts, academia, private-sector organisations and civil society.

Speaking as Chief Guest, Mr. Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Hon’ble Chief Adviser, said that the report comes at a defining moment for the country. He further added, “This report gives us a picture of where we stand and what we must prioritise so that AI strengthens public institutions, not replaces human judgment, and protects citizens instead of exploiting them.”

Dr. Susan Vize, UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, noted that the RAM offers a practical foundation for evidence-based decision-making. “Bangladesh has taken a crucial step towards ensuring that AI advances human rights, dignity and sustainability. UNESCO remains a committed partner in this journey,” she added.

Mr. Stefan Liller, Resident Representative of UNDP Bangladesh, emphasised the development implications of the assessment. “Whether AI narrows or widens gaps will depend on the choices countries make now. Strengthening connectivity, skills, data and compute infrastructure, building trustworthy regulatory and governance frameworks, and tailoring AI strategies to national capacity will all play decisive roles,” he added.

The European Union, whose contribution enabled the RAM exercise, welcomed Bangladesh’s commitment to building an ethical and inclusive AI landscape. Mr. Michal Kreja, Head of Development Cooperation at the EU Delegation, said, “We hope this report helps to build trusted AI ecosystems so that innovation benefits all citizens, especially youth, women, and marginalised communities.”

The AI RAM Report of Bangladeshis intended to guide the country’s long-term planning as Bangladesh works toward finalising its National AI Policy and strengthening its digital governance frameworks.

The RAM process aligns with the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, adopted globally by 193 Member States, and reflects Bangladesh’s broader commitment to ensuring that AI supports public good, transparency and national development priorities.

UNESCO, UNDP, a2i and the European Union reaffirmed their commitment to continue supporting the Government of Bangladesh in building the policies, skills and institutional safeguards needed for responsible AI adoption.
