FDA Issues Health Alert on Multiple Brands of Ground Cinnamon Containing Elevated Lead Levels
EMSL Analytical offers comprehensive food safety testing services to protect consumers and support regulatory compliance.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released its third public health alert of the year concerning ground cinnamon, focusing on products often consumed by infants and young children. In its latest update, the agency recommended recalls of 11 brands of ground cinnamon found to contain elevated lead levels, ranging from 2.03 to 7.68 parts per million (ppm).
According to the FDA, consumers are urged to discard and avoid purchasing the listed ground cinnamon products after testing revealed unsafe levels of lead. The products have a long shelf life so consumers should be sure to check their homes for the items.
“Based on the FDA’s assessment, consuming these products could increase blood lead levels,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “The agency has also highlighted that long-term dietary exposure to lead can cause harmful health effects, particularly among individuals already at risk from other sources of lead exposure.”
Elevated levels of heavy metals in foods or beverages pose serious health concerns. To help safeguard the public and support industry compliance, EMSL Analytical provides independent third-party testing for food growers, processors, manufacturers, and importers. Their scientists analyze raw ingredients, processing surfaces, and finished products for contaminants including heavy metals, pesticides, and microbes. EMSL also offers shelf-life studies, food labeling services, and a variety of other testing solutions.
