“Describing Medium Build’s music—which combines the vocal textures of R&B crooners like Omar Apollo and Frank Ocean with the emo tendencies of Dashboard Confessional and Fall Out Boy with the fine-tuned songcraft of mainstream country—can feel like an absurd exercise in genre-hopping.” -Rolling Stone

“The indie rocker’s music is marked by his compassionate, conversational lyricism and grounded, grungy sound.” -NPR

Rising star Medium Build, a.k.a. critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Nick Carpenter, is expanding his takeaways EP to encompass an entire ongoing playlist of new music with four brand new songs, out now via slowplay/Island Records. Listen HERE and share Carpenter’s latest single “BalanceHERE.

Of the track “Balance,” Carpenter notes, “Wrote this song with my buddy James Glaves. We’ve both struggled for years with sobriety. Failed attempts at moderation. Manic swings between wellness and party lifestyles. My whole life sometimes feels like this huge pendulum swing. Never centered and balanced. This is a snapshot of trying to find that stillness in the chaos.”

The project also includes the new track “Ben Affleck,” which Carpenter says, “Y’all know that picture of Ben Affleck having the cigarette? I know you do. And I know you know the feeling of helpless abandon you can see in his face and body. This is a song about that feeling. It’s a song about wanting to die and wanting to know if you have any real friends. It’s a song about feeling fake as fuck. It’s a song about my good buddy Ben Affleck.”

The expanded playlist includes the re-released tracks “Stick Around” from Carpenter’s Country LP and “John & Lydia” from Carpenter’s Marietta EP, alongside the newly released tracks “Balance” and “Ben Affleck.” Originally released earlier this year, the first three takeaways tracks reimagine songs from the early chapters of Carpenter’s career, featuring one reworked track each from his self-released albums softboy, roughboy and Wild.

Earlier this month, Carpenter teamed up with Nashville-based singer/songwriter Sydney Rose for a cover of Charli XCX’s hit song “Sympathy is a Knife” for the All Things Go 10th Anniversary Benefit Compilation. Medium Build also saw extensive praise over the summer for the new singles “Last Time” and “Drug Dealer.”

The addition of new takeaways tracks continues a busy 2025 for Medium Build which includes a nomination for Emerging Act of the Year at the 24th Annual Americana Honors & Awards. He toured throughout the summer, joining Alex Warren, Tyler Childers and Rainbow Kitten Surprise on select dates including two nights at NYC’s Forest Hills Stadium with Childers and a stop at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre with Rainbow Kitten Surprise.

Earlier this year, Carpenter supported Role Model on his sold-out No Place Like Tour for five dates in Australia. He also headlined shows across New Zealand and Ireland, with the international dates featured in installments of the mini docuseries “DIRT IN YOUR LUNGS.” Watch the official videos HERE.

Additionally, Medium Build performed at the Coachella Music Festival, Kilby Block Party and Los Angeles’ El Rey this summer, and completed a 10-date co-headline run with Petey U.S.A.

Medium Build’s critically acclaimed debut full-length, Country, is out now on slowplay/Island Records. The record continues to see extensive praise from NPR Music, People, Billboard, The Tennessean, NME and many more, while Rolling Stone featured Medium Build in this year’s “Future 25” feature.

Country finds Carpenter wrestling with the idea of home across the album’s twelve songs. Born in Georgia with a close relationship to his Southern roots, the artist now splits his time between hometowns in Anchorage, Alaska and Nashville, Tennessee. “I wanted this album to have my goddamn DNA on it,” Carpenter details. “I wanted Country to have a human touch. I want Country to be something you love with and dance with and cry with and sleep with and lean into.”

Creating Medium Build in 2015, Nick Carpenter has gone on to release five studio albums to date. He has become a favorite across the creative community, with artists including John Mayer, Zach Bryan, Elton John, Boygenius and more counting themselves amongst his fans. He has toured with the likes of Lewis Capaldi, FINNEAS, Holly Humberstone and Briston Maroney, and found himself in a highly coveted slot on Zane Lowe’s Artists to Watch 2024 list. In 2023, his collaboration with X Ambassadors on “Friend For Life” found him entering the Billboard charts for the first time.
