CCEP invests in heating innovation with HotGreen Solutions
Find out why we’re investing in ultra-efficient heat pump technology.
CCEP & HotGreen
We’re investing in the British clean-technology start-up, HotGreen.
HotGreen is developing ultra-efficient industrial heat pumps - an innovation that could allow us to further reduce emissions at our manufacturing sites.
So, why are we so hot on heat pumps?
Industrial process heat accounts for more than 20% of global CO2 emissions.1 Our own operations and commercial sites account for around 13% of CCEP’s value chain emissions.
Cutting these emissions isn’t easy. We need heat to produce our drinks - especially when it comes to pasteurisation and sterilising our packaging.
Typically, this heat is produced on-site by boilers, some of which rely on fossil fuels.
But what if there was a more efficient way of heating our operations?
Innovation in action
HotGreen’s heat pumps use electricity to transfer residual heat from one environment (like warmth in the outside air or under the ground) to a production site’s existing pipework, acting like a giant reverse refrigerator.
Electricity is used to compress a refrigerant, which absorbs heat from the source and then releases it inside the facility to power essential processes.
Crucially, HotGreen’s heat pumps are four times more energy efficient than a traditional boiler.
And with an increasing proportion of the electricity consumed at our sites coming from renewable sources - that gives us the potential to accelerate progress towards decarbonising our operations.
Not only that, but with industry facing higher energy bills in recent years, HotGreen’s ultra-efficient heat pump could potentially help facilities cut their energy costs in the long run.
What’s next?
We’re delighted that our Ventures team are working directly with the founders of HotGreen and will be exploring the possibility of trialling their technology within our own supply chain.
Watch this space!
We see real impact potential in HotGreen’s approach to energy-efficient heating – which aligns with our own sustainability ambitions. We’re excited to see how their innovation could help accelerate us towards our 2040 net zero targets. - Sashidar Rajendra, Associate Director, Ventures
This funding milestone is a significant step toward our mission to help industrial plants save cost while cutting carbon. Despite rising energy bills and the substantial carbon footprint associated with industrial heat, HotGreen has been set up to address a clear unmet need for a low-carbon, commercially-viable solutions that industry could adopt at scale. - Georgia Ware, CEO, HotGreen
