Beware of Counterfeit and Misrepresented Respirators in Puerto Rico
Zimmetry Environmental provides consulting, testing, and training services to protect workers, building occupants, and patients from inhalation hazards, and to help keep companies and institutions in compliance with Respiratory Protection Standards.
NIOSH is responsible for the testing and approval of respirators used in U.S. workplaces.
Earlier this year, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) published the fact sheet Informing Workers of Counterfeit and Misrepresented Respirators. It provides employers and workers with information on counterfeit and misrepresented respirators as well as tips on how to tell if a respirator is approved by NIOSH.
The document shares that NIOSH is responsible for the testing and approval of respirators used in U.S. workplaces. The agency’s approval standards ensure that respirators meet the necessary safety and performance requirements.
“When respiratory protection is necessary in a workplace, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires the use of NIOSH Approved respirators,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “In Puerto Rico, respiratory protection standards for most workers are enforced by the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Administration (PR OSHA). Counterfeit and misrepresented respirators have not been approved by NIOSH and may not provide the advertised level of protection.”
To help ensure workers are protected, the industrial hygiene, infection control, and air quality experts at Zimmetry Environmental provide companies, institutions, and government agencies in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean with the necessary resources to identify and mitigate exposures to airborne hazards. Their experts help to ensure that workers are properly protected with the correct respirators and other personal protective equipment through consulting, training, testing, and monitoring services. Zimmetry also offers mask fit testing services, air testing, engineering control assessments, employee hazard communications, and compliance and management system audits.
Zimmetry has even sponsored an educational video about NIOSH’s new fact sheet discussing respirators that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/h3liWcj9V-o
