National Children’s Health Month Highlights Need to Protect Puerto Rico’s Youth from Environmental Hazards

October marks National Children’s Health Month, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness about the environmental factors that can impact children’s well-being. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emphasizes that children are particularly vulnerable to pollutants due to their developing bodies, unique behaviors, and higher intake of food, air, and water relative to their size.
From pesticides and lead to asbestos, radon, mold, and volatile organic compounds, environmental hazards can pose serious health risks to children’s nervous, immune, respiratory, and digestive systems. Everyday activities such as crawling on floors or mouthing objects may also increase their chances of exposure.
