Fungal Disease Awareness Week & Infection Control Resources in Puerto Rico
Zimmetry Environmental provides environmental testing, monitoring, consulting, and training services to identify and mitigate contact with microbial pathogens and contaminants in the built environment.
People with a weakened or suppressed immune system are typically those most at risk of developing a fungal infection.
Today marks the beginning of Fungal Disease Awareness Week (FDAW). It runs through the 19th and was created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an annual event to highlight the importance of recognizing, treating, and preventing fungal diseases.
For 2025, CDC’s outreach activities focus on a different cross-cutting fungal disease theme each day. They include:
- Monday - Testing and Antifungals
- Tuesday - Fungal Diseases and One Health
- Wednesday - Neglected Tropical Diseases
- Thursday - Fungal Pneumonias
- Friday - Fungal Diseases and Drug Resistance
The agency warns:
Fungal diseases are increasing worldwide. Yet, they are often misdiagnosed, which can lead to severe, potentially chronic illness, and sometimes costs lives. Additionally, misdiagnosed patients often receive antibiotics, drugs designed to fight bacteria, instead of the antifungals needed to treat fungal infections.
“As the CDC cautions, antimicrobial resistance is growing, and with only three antifungals available and no vaccines for fungal diseases, awareness, prevention, and early diagnosis and treatment are critical,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “People with a weakened or suppressed immune system are typically those most at risk of developing a fungal infection. However, exposure can cause other concerns for almost everyone, since breathing elevated concentrations of fungi can cause respiratory irritation, allergies, and act as an asthma trigger for some asthmatics.”
In Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean, the industrial hygiene, indoor environmental quality, and infection control professionals at Zimmetry Environmental are dedicated to protecting people from exposure to fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens.
