BASF’s Performance Materials division plants in Europe are now all REDcert² certified

Ludwigshafen, Germany – WEBWIRE
  • All ten BASF’s Performance Materials production sites in Europe certified according to REDcert²
  • High-performance plastics portfolio continuously evolving toward sustainability
  • Valid for engineering plastics, polyurethanes, thermoplastic polyurethanes and specialty polymers

Following the transition of all its European sites to renewable electricity in January 2025, BASF Performance Materials is now celebrating the certification of its production sites according to REDcert2, a certification scheme for the use of sustainable feedstock in the chemical industry. With the recent addition of its polyurethane production site in Malacky, Slovakia, the division can now offer its customers certified mass balance solutions from its ten plants.

“At BASF, we do not only talk about ideas; but we also deliver proof points. This certification is another milestone on #OurPlasticsJourney, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and circularity in plastics. With that, we are ready to meet our customers’ needs in sustainable solutions today and tomorrow,” comments Alexander Weiser, Head of BASF Performance Materials Europe.

BASF Performance Materials’ portfolio is continuously evolving toward lower carbon footprints. This portfolio includes engineering plastics, polyurethanes, thermoplastic polyurethanes and specialty polymers. Certified materials from all these product groups in Europe can now be offered to customers. The alternative raw material is fed into the early stage of production at a certified site and attributed to these products via a mass balance approach.

REDcert² enables the certification of sustainable material flows in the chemical industry. BASF applies this scheme to certify the reduction of fossil feedstock use — either through the Biomass Balance approach, which incorporates renewable raw materials, or via ChemCycling®, which utilizes recycled feedstocks.

About BASF’s Performance Materials division

BASF’s Performance Materials division is at the forefront of the much-needed sustainability transformation in plastics. Our products are co-created with customers around the globe to bring innovations to four major industry sectors – transportation, consumer goods, industrial applications, and construction. Our R&D focuses on all stages of the plastics journey: Make, Use and Recycle. The MAKE phase is about improving how plastics are made, from product design to the choice of raw materials and the manufacturing process itself. The USE phase enhances plastics’ strengths such as light weight, robustness, and thermal resistance. At the end of the product lifecycle, the RECYCLE phase looks at how to close the loop to achieve a circular economy. In 2023, the Performance Materials division achieved global sales of €7.2 billion.
