AirAsia inaugurates Kuala Lumpur–Semarang service, reaffirms role as the largest foreign LCC operating in Indonesia

SEMARANG – WEBWIRE

AirAsia Malaysia (AK) has officially commenced its Kuala Lumpur–Semarang service, further strengthening its position as the largest foreign low-cost carrier (LCC) operating in Indonesia with the widest international network into the country.

The new route connects Malaysia with Central Java’s capital city, adding to AirAsia’s growing portfolio of destinations across Indonesia. With the return of international flights to Jenderal Ahmad Yani Airport, travellers now have greater access to Central Java’s cultural landmarks, business hubs, and emerging  economic zones. The service is also expected to enhance bilateral trade and investment opportunities, while supporting Indonesia’s target of attracting up to 16 million foreign tourists in 2025.

Ahmad Luthfi, Central Java Governor said: “With Jenderal Ahmad Yani Airport reinstated as one of 36 international airports under Ministerial Decree No. KM 37 of 2025, AirAsia’s return is timely. The Kuala Lumpur–Semarang route strengthens tourism flows, business activity, and investment into Central Java, supporting the national agenda to position aviation as a key driver of economic growth.”

Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, said: “The launch of direct flights from Semarang to Kuala Lumpur significantly strengthened accessibility for travellers from Central Java. This enhanced connectivity not only makes it easier for Indonesian travellers to experience Malaysia’s rich cultural and leisure offerings but also supports our preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026. We look forward to welcoming more families, culture enthusiasts, and shoppers from cities beyond the major hubs"

Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, AirAsia Malaysia CEO said: “Indonesia is AirAsia Malaysia’s single largest international market and we are proud to reaffirm our leadership as the biggest foreign LCC connecting Malaysia and Indonesia. Our entry into Semarang reflects our commitment to growing secondary cities, not just major hubs, and providing affordable, convenient and direct access for travellers. With Semarang’s heritage-rich Kota Lama, Lawang Sewu, Sam Poo Kong temple and world-famous lumpia, this city is a true cultural gem waiting to be explored.”

AirAsia Malaysia (AK) now operates flights to 17 destinations in Indonesia, including Jakarta, Bali (Denpasar), Medan, Yogyakarta, Banda Aceh, Makassar, Padang, Pekanbaru, Balikpapan, Labuan Bajo, Lombok, Palembang and Semarang, with Pontianak commencing on 12 September 2025. The airline also connects Kuching to Pontianak and Penang to Jakarta and Medan, cementing its status as the foreign airline with the broadest coverage in Indonesia.
