A collaborative effort to drive circular progress

Since the beginning of 2025, STABILO’s Point 88 and Pen 68 have been produced using polypropylene (PP) based on renewable feedstock from our Bornewables™ portfolio. The selected PP grade is a drop-in solution that offers the same performance, processability, and safety standards as fossil-based PP. This means that the pens retain their familiar look, feel, and function - just with a reduced CO₂ footprint.

All Bornewables PP grades are made using sustainably sourced renewable feedstocks derived solely from waste and residue streams, such as used cooking oil, residues from vegetable oil processing or wood pulp manufacturing. These waste and residues can be traced back to their point of origin following the ISCC PLUS chain of custody. The allocation and verification of renewable content through the entire value chain is based on the mass balance model.

Switching from 1 kg of fossil-based polypropylene to 1 kg of Bornewables PP saves at least 2 kg carbon dioxide equivalent. This reduction in emissions supports all three collaboration partners in their efforts to lower Scope 3 emissions.

The collaboration came together through Gehr, a global leader in the production of thermoplastic semi-finished products and a long-standing Borealis partner. As the converter supplying components to STABILO, Gehr helped identify Borealis as the right partner to deliver a reliable solution to improve the carbon footprint of the Point 88 and Pen 68 products.

For STABILO, the new pens represent another step towards its climate neutrality and net zero ambitions. “We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact while continuing to offer products that meet the high expectations of our customers,” says Horst Brinkmann, STABILO CEO“To achieve that, we need strong, value-aligned partnerships like this one with Gehr and Borealis, where everyone brings their expertise and sustainability ambition to the table.”

Working together to ensure a smooth transition

Together with Gehr, we worked side by side with STABILO to enable a straightforward and smooth switch.

Helmut Gehr, Gehr Owner and CEO, explains, “We aim to support our customers with high-performance solutions that also advance sustainability. This project with STABILO and Borealis is a great example—by combining our expertise, we’ve enabled a renewable-based solution that fits seamlessly into existing processes and delivers real environmental benefits.”

John Webster, Borealis Head of Marketing, says: “Helping STABILO switch to the Bornewables-based PP in such a well-known product is a perfect example of how we’re enabling life’s essentials. It shows how we can deliver high-performance materials that support the value chain to reach their sustainability goals with no compromises.”
