Salesforce Signs Definitive Agreement to Acquire Waii
Salesforce has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Waii, a leading enterprise-grade natural language-to-SQL platform. Waii’s technology translates plain-language questions into complex, production-ready SQL queries, helping users access and act on data more naturally and efficiently.
Enterprises are generating more data than ever, but its value remains locked behind technical and semantic complexity. Business users struggle to navigate disconnected data silos, often relying on technical teams to translate business questions into database queries. This creates friction and delay. Generative AI promises to bridge this gap, but delivering the required accuracy, security, and context at an enterprise scale demands more than simple text-to-SQL translation.
Waii was built to solve this problem by creating a dynamic metadata knowledge graph that maps an enterprise’s entire data landscape. This graph represents not just database schemas, but the intricate relationships between tables, columns, business metrics, and governance rules. This rich, contextual understanding allows its core engine to translate natural language questions into highly accurate, deeply contextual SQL queries. Waii’s platform goes beyond prompt-to-SQL basics with a dialect-aware SQL compiler, built-in query optimization, and full-stack enterprise integration all powered by its knowledge graph foundation.
“The future of business isn’t about having the most data; it’s about making that data speak a common language. Our vision is to empower every employee, from the boardroom to the frontline, to have a trusted conversation with their data. At Salesforce, we know that a deep understanding of metadata is the key to this future. With Waii, we’re not just augmenting our stack; we’re acquiring the catalyst that makes this vision a reality for our customers” said Raveendrnathan Loganathan, EVP Salesforce Data Cloud.
“In a world where every database speaks a different dialect of SQL, Waii’s metadata knowledge graph will create a unified semantic layer, enabling users and AI agents to understand and communicate with any data source while removing technical barriers to critical insights. We built Waii to close the gap between what people want to ask and what their data systems can understand,” said Gunther Hagleitner , co-founder and CEO, Waii. “Joining Salesforce will allow us to bring that mission to millions of users, powering the next era of trusted, intelligent systems.”
After the acquisition closes, Salesforce plans to integrate Waii into Data Cloud. Waii’s core technology, which dynamically constructs a metadata knowledge graph of an enterprise’s data, will power agentic workflows and AI-driven insights across the Salesforce platform, including Agentforce and Tableau Next.
The technology is expected to enhance Salesforce’s ability to deliver more intuitive ways to explore and manage data. It will form the foundation of Tableau’s next-generation semantic engine, powered by a live knowledge graph. This will enable faster, more relevant analytics through true language-driven exploration, where the system understands the user’s intent, not just their words.
Waii’s team includes deeply technical founders with expertise in data infrastructure, engineering, and knowledge graph systems. Their work reflects years of focused development on one of the most fundamental challenges in enterprise AI: helping people and systems speak the language of data, fluently, securely, and at scale.
The acquisition is expected to close in Salesforce’s third fiscal quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.
