North Carolina’s Most Populous County Launches Campaign to Prevent Childhood Lead Poisoning

Raleigh, North Carolina – WEBWIRE

Recently, the County of Wake, North Carolina announced it was launching a new educational campaign to raise awareness about childhood lead exposure risks. A part of the program has been the development of various educational materials that will be given to families and childcare facilities.

According to the announcement:

Because lead poisoning can have lasting effects and many families are unaware of hidden risks, the campaign will equip parents with simple tools and information to keep their homes and children safe.

Although exposure to lead can be dangerous for people of all ages, it is particularly harmful to the developing brain and nervous system of young children. Nationwide, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that millions of households have children living in them that are exposed to high levels of lead.

“Most young children are exposed to lead where they spend the majority of their time, which is almost always their home and any childcare facilities they may attend,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “These are places where lead-based paints were often used up until the late 1970s. At EMSL, we support campaigns to protect children, families, and workers from lead hazards. We have lead testing laboratories in North Carolina and dozens more across North America. EMSL offers indoor and outdoor environmental testing for lead from paint chips, dust, water, soil, surfaces, and other sources. Sampling supplies are also available, along with easy-to-use test kits.”
