Toxic Meth Lab Causes Property to Be Condemned by Local Authorities

EMSL Analytical provides laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, and personal protective equipment to identify and mitigate exposure risks to dangerous chemicals left behind by clandestine drug labs.

Multiple news outlets recently reported on the bust of a methamphetamine lab operating out of a residential home in Chenango County, New York. According to reports, multiple individuals were arrested and the New York State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Unit was brought in to handle all the hazardous chemicals. The property was then condemned by local officials.

Tragically, cases like this happen all across the country, even though much of the methamphetamine abused in the United States now comes from drug trafficking organizations that manufacture it in foreign super labs. Some meth is still being made domestically in clandestine laboratories that continue to put first responders and people living in and around these properties at risk.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides a list of chemicals used in meth production and their many health hazards. They include acetone, ammonium nitrate, anhydrous ammonia, camping fuel, ether, hydriodic acid, hydrogen chloride gas, hydrogen peroxide, iodine, isopropyl alcohol, lithium metal, methanol, mineral spirits, muriatic acid, pseudoephedrine, red phosphorous, sodium hydroxide, sodium metal, sulfuric acid, and toluene.

“These meth labs have been found everywhere, including in single-family homes, apartments, businesses, RVs, and even hotels,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Producing a small amount of meth creates many pounds of toxic waste. This hazardous waste is often disposed of down a drain or dumped outdoors. Carpeting, wallboard, ceiling tiles, furniture, and fabric can easily absorb spilled or vaporized chemicals. If not properly remediated, these properties are also a threat to future building occupants as chemical residues are left behind on surfaces and in materials.”

To help in these situations, EMSL Analytical offers laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, and an easy-to-use Methamphetamine Test Kit. This form of testing is used to identify unknown substances and chemical residues, and also to confirm that any remediation efforts have been successful. EMSL has even sponsored an educational video about meth labs and building occupant exposure risks that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/Mt_P591sBAo
