Dietary Supplement Recalled and Allergy Alert Issued Due to an Undeclared Allergen

EMSL Analytical offers food labeling and testing services to identify allergens, microbial contaminants, pesticides, and other food safety concerns to protect consumers, and to help businesses avoid costly product recalls.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey – WEBWIRE

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted information about an allergy alert and product recall issued by a dietary supplement company. One lot of a brand of lactoferrin as apolactoferrin 300 milligram capsules, is part of the recall because it may contain undeclared milk.

According to the recall notice:

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

This recall was reportedly initiated after an FDA inspection discovered the product contained milk and was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of milk. Consumers who have purchased the recalled product and have a milk allergy or sensitivity are urged not to consume it.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to food and include milk, eggs, wheat, crustacean shellfish, fish, tree nuts, peanuts, and soybeans. Sesame became the ninth major food allergen to require special labeling through the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act, a federal law passed in 2021 that went into effect in 2023.

“At EMSL Analytical, our food scientists are dedicated to helping food manufacturers, importers, and distributors comply with FALCPA, FASTER, and other labeling and testing requirements,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “We offer a wide range of testing services, including testing for allergens. EMSL also tests for microbial and chemical contaminants, and provides shelf life studies, FDA import detention services, HAACP guidance and testing, and more.”
