Introducing Passkeys on Facebook for an Easier Sign-In
Takeaways
- Passkeys make it simpler and safer than ever to sign in to Facebook with the same fingerprint, face or PIN you already use on your mobile device to verify your identity.
- We are rolling out passkeys on Facebook, with availability on Messenger in the coming months.
- You can easily set up and manage passkeys in your Accounts Center.
We’re introducing passkeys on Facebook for mobile devices, offering another tool to safeguard your privacy and security. Passkeys are a new way to verify your identity and log in to your account that’s easier and more secure than traditional passwords.
Passkeys will soon be available on iOS and Android mobile devices for Facebook, and we will begin rolling out passkeys to Messenger in the coming months. The same passkey you set up for Facebook will also work on Messenger once this capability launches.
What Is a Passkey?Passkeys are secure digital credentials that act as alternatives for passwords. They allow you to log in to websites and apps securely by verifying it’s you using the fingerprint, face or PIN you use to unlock your device.
Passkeys can give you peace of mind about your account’s security – they can’t be guessed or easily stolen. And once created, they make it faster and easier than ever to log in to Facebook, no memorized password needed. All you’ll need is a compatible mobile device and a Facebook account.
The technology behind passkeys was developed by the FIDO Alliance, an open industry association focused on reducing the world’s reliance on passwords. Meta is an active member of the FIDO Alliance.
Keeping Your Account SecurePasskeys are an upgrade in security compared to traditional passwords and one-time SMS codes because they are resistant to guessing or theft by malicious websites or scam links, making them effective against phishing and password spraying attacks. By using passkeys, you’ll have increased protection against online threats while also simplifying your login experience.
Passkeys and the fingerprint, face scan or PIN you use to create them are always stored on your device and we’ll never see, share or store them.
Do More with Your PasskeyPasskeys aren’t limited to logging in to your Facebook account. You’ll also be able to use your passkey to securely autofill payment information when making purchases using Meta Pay, and eventually to log in to Messenger and protect your encrypted message backups.
Setting Up Your PasskeyCreating your passkey is easy and only takes a few simple steps. You can set up and manage your passkey in Accounts Center, found within the Settings menu on Facebook.
You also may be prompted to set up a passkey when you log in to Facebook.
Once it’s set up, you’ll be able to use your passkey moving forward to log in to Facebook on your mobile device. You’ll still be able to use other authentication methods, such as your password, to access your account. That way you can still access your Facebook account when you’re using a device that doesn’t support passkeys yet.
